Mural Mania in Saskatoon: 2017

Saskatoon has been ramping up its public art in a major way lately, specifically when it comes to murals. I’m sure there’s more than double this many new larger-than-life pieces this year but I went out and captured a few notable new ones for you. Kudos to the artists and funding organizations for recognizing the importance of public art in a city, and helping to bring some of the big boring walls to life.

Handmaking Moccasins at Wanuskewin’s Culture Week

I can’t remember the last time I set aside time for handmade projects that require skill and a creative eye. At least half my job as a digital media content creator is spent in front of a screen or behind a lens. It is less exciting than it appears online.

Which is why I was excited to see an event page on Facebook advertising Culture Week at Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Of particular interest to me was a workshop to make moccasins. It was also free thanks to sponsorship by PotashCorp.

Guitaring in Saskatoon

Those of us that are old enough, especially those of us who are musicians, will remember H.E.L. Music on Broadway, which closed down at least a decade ago. I darkened the doorway there quite a bit, from taking guitar lessons at MTM School of Music upstairs to doing in store appearances with my band in the 90s. The Vinyl Diner occupies part of the upstairs space still, so it’s nice that music still floats around that building on Broadway.
